Local Public Transport Programme Committee

The focus of this committee is on: local public transport infrastructure; passenger information systems and new technology; finance; urban transport systems and network planning; managing public transport companies. For ETC 2005, we would like to particularly encourage papers under the following themes:

  • Long term demand effects of changes in transport accessibility or costs. Do planners understand the full long term impacts of these? What are the methods for and experience of improving accessibility planning?
  • Ownership and financing of local public transport. What are the strengths and weaknesses of different models applied in different countries?
  • Deregulation and private sector participation, with particular emphasis on change management in EU accession countries. How can some of the mistakes made in Western Europe be avoided?
  • Airport surface access. How can air passengers be encouraged to use public transport? How do they make their mode choice, and how does that differ from other travellers?
  • Transport project costs: How can cost overruns be avoided? How can public transport solutions be provided that deliver best value for money (e.g. cost contained light rail or other solutions)?

In keeping with the objectives of the Association, the Committee intends its sessions at ETC 2005 to provide the maximum opportunity for public transport professionals from different countries to exchange information and ideas on various ways of addressing common problems and challenges. Papers offering practical perspectives and experience will be particularly welcome.
