Planning for Sustainable Land Use and Transport Programme Committee
The committee is keen to encourage debate on the integration of transport and land-use
planning and to find examples of good practice.
Papers are therefore sought on:
- integration of land-use and transport;
- sustainable patterns of urban development;
- promoting social inclusion through improved access; and
- improving the balance between vehicles and cycling and walking in urban areas.
The focus of this stream is on sustainable solutions to problems of urban land-use and transport
and how to measure and evaluate their effectiveness and impacts
Planning for more sustainable patterns of development and reducing car dependency
- Developing and implementing integrated land-use and transport strategies to reduce car dependence
- Assessing the effectiveness of integrated packages of measures
- Methodological issues of policy implementation design and delivery
Managing demand, improving access for all and creating alternatives
- Creating dedicated infrastructures, bus lanes, HOV lanes, etc.
- Managing mobility in city centres, for companies and individuals
- Promotion and awareness campaigns, acceptance
- Promoting social inclusion by improving access and transport choices for all
Promoting walking and cycling - creating places for people
- Strategies to promote walking and cycling
- Creating places for people - redesigning the street/revitalising the town centre
- Reducing dependence on the car through travel plans to school, work, hospital, etc
Quantification of external effects, environmental appraisal
- Methodological issues, quantification
- Externalities and policies to control them
- Health effects of air pollution
- Strategies to mitigate global warming
- Assessing the environmental impact of transport programmes and projects
- Strategic Environmental Assessment
