Strasbourg - the home of the European Transport Conference

Since 2003, Strasbourg has been the location for the conference. The city was selected because of its position in the heart of Europe and for the enthusiastic support of the authorities of Strasbourg, Bas-Rhin and Alsace and from the French state. Market research of delegates showed an extremely high level of satisfaction with the event and the location.

Satellite Meetings
and Workshops

In recent years, a number of EU Research consortia and other project groups have held their management or dissemination meetings during or adjoining the Conference. This can prove to be a convenient time if a number of the group members already plan to attend the Conference. If you would like to consider this option, please contact Sally Scarlett on +44 20 7348 1978.

Workshop on the State-of-Practice and State-of the-Art,
Monday 3 October

Over the past fifty years, both the theory and practice of transport demand modelling has advanced substantially. However, the relationship between theory and practice is complex and often problematic and it underpins many of the recurrent themes of debate at the European Transport Conference. However, the subject is rarely broached directly.

The objective of this workshop, which is organised by the Centre for Transport Studies at Imperial College London, in conjunction with the Innovative Methods in Transport Analysis, Planning and Appraisal and Applied Methods in Transport Planning committees, is therefore to bring together leading practitioners and researchers from Europe and the rest of the world to share experiences and address a number of key questions including:

  • What is the nature of the gap between the state-of-practice and the state-of-the-art?

  • Is this gap growing, and if so, why, and should we be concerned?

  • How are research needs currently signalled and how can they be signalled more effectively?

  • How can worthwhile theoretical innovations be most effectively propagated into practice?

  • What are the implications and requirements for training and professional outreach?

Attendance at the Workshop is open to all but it would help with the planning if you could indicate on the booking form if you plan to attend.

Awards

Each year, AET makes a number of prestigious awards to recognise the best papers presented at the European Transport Conference. Papers considered for these awards will be reviewed by a subject-panel made up of senior academics and professionals from across the transport community. The awards include:

  • The Martlet Award for the Best Paper by a young author on public transport planning and/or management showing both innovation and application.

  • The Neil Mansfield Award for the Best Paper by a sole author aged 35 or under.

  • The Sir Colin Buchanan Award for a plan, strategy, project or piece of significant research or experimentation that reflects the work and thinking of Sir Colin Buchanan

The award ceremonies will take place during the three lunchtimes when the winners will say a few words about their project. Where possible, those short-listed for an award will be notified two weeks before the Conference so that their presence during the awards ceremony can be organised.

Sponsorship

The Conference offers many opportunities for sponsorship. Companies find that this can be a cost-effective way of attending and gaining some publicity and networking possibilities.

To sponsor a seminar costs up to Euro 5300 or £3500. For this, the sponsor is able to distribute publicity material and have display boards at the Conference, to have their logo displayed in a seminar and to have up to six days attendance at the Conference.

Other sponsorship options, including the placement of a logo on the web-site, the supply of conference bags, the provision of wine for a reception or for the Conference Dinner, are possible and can be discussed with Sally Scarlett.

Technical Visits

A total of three technical visits will be offered during the Conference. The visits provide a time and cost-efficient opportunity to see some developments in the local area. The visits are:-

Wednesday 5 October

TramWay, one of the most far-reaching transport projects ever devised for the area, will be operational in Mulhouse by late 2005. Offering tramway and rail travel, it will initially provide an urban tramway and feeder service. From 2008 onwards TramTrain carriages will be running on SNCF (French Railways) tracks outside the city on an initial 20 kilometre-long line. This visit will complement the programme organised by the Local Public Transport Programme Committee and has been arranged with Sitram, Syndicat Intercommunal des Transports de l'Agglomeration Mulhousienne. It is necessary to book a place using the appropriate section of the booking form. The visit is free for those who are booked to attend all three days of the Conference.

Thursday 6 October

A visit to Lohr Industrie to see MODALOHR, a low-floor articulated railway wagon specially designed for carrying non-specific road equipment. Modalohr can transport 4 m high trucks within the GB1 loading gauge, thus offering the possibility of creating "motorways on wheels" on most trunk rail routes in mainland Europe. The visit is free of charge but it is necessary to book a place using the appropriate section of the booking form.

Thursday 6 October

There will be a day visit to Ettlingen and Karlsruhe. This will include presentations on and visits to urban renewal, cycling and light rail projects. Transport will be by train from Strasbourg to Karlsruhe and return. The cost will be Euro 40 or £30. Please book your place using the appropriate section of the booking form.

Pre-Conference Tour

Vosges and Chãteau du Haut Koenigsbourg

A visit to Strasbourg for the conference would be sadly lacking if you don't take the opportunity to get into the surrounding hills. On Sunday 2 October a day trip will be arranged to the Vosges Mountains returning to Strasbourg in time for the evening function. Anyone travelling southwest of Strasbourg can't have failed to see the amazing sight of Chãteau du Haut Koenigsbourg towering above the plains. Built in the 12th Century and at an altitude of 757 metres, it is one of France's national monuments. The Vosges are a paradise for walkers, both for nature lovers and those interested in historical ruins.

On the way we try out some of Alsace's transport. A short train trip from Strasbourg takes us to Sélestat, from where a short bus trip takes us to the hills. The Vosges are criss-crossed by a network of paths and we follow these up through the forest to Haut Koenigsbourg. The chãteau was restored at the beginning of the 20th Century and it's possible to visit it with or without a guide (several languages possible). On the downhill walk we take another route visiting other points of interest as time permits. These could be ruined castles, rocky outcrops, viewpoints or the charming town of Chatenois.

We walk at a relaxed pace and the length of the walk will be adjusted according to the abilities and wishes of those participating.

The cost of the tour is Euro 25 or £17 including transport. Picnic lunch is an extra Euro 10 or £7.

Bookings

Please book by sending an email to the following address:
simonhayman@yahoo.com

Please state the number of people who will be taking part and the number of lunches which shall be required. Payment should be made to ETC together with the conference fee.

Stewards

In order to encourage more students and young professionals to attend the Conference, the Association has allocated more places for seminar stewards. Those selected will act as a steward for one day and then will have free attendance on two days of the Conference. Travel and overnight accommodation is not included and those applying must be able to fund this part of their attendance at the Conference.

The Association wishes to encourage stewards from France and Germany and has set aside 10 stewardsÕ places for those from France and 10 from Germany. Anyone interested in performing this important and interesting function should apply to Sally Scarlett.
