Conference Language
The working language of the Conference will be English. However, the seminar on Comparative International Experience, promoted by GART and CERTU, will have simultaneous interpretation in French/English.
Evening Session at 1900 hours on Monday 18 September
The rules of the game
Andrew Daly, RAND Europe, NL
and UK and Geoff Hyman, Department for Transport, UK
In formulating travel demand models for planning studies, it is natural to expect that certain rules will apply to the formulation of the 'utility' functions that appear: price must have a negative coefficient, for example. But the issue of what other rules can or should be maintained is not at all clear: should the price variable be linear? Should it be uniform across the travel alternatives? etc. Most particularly, what goes wrong if the rules are broken? The presentation will clarify a number of the issues and lead to a discussion of what should be done in practice. A paper associated with the presentation goes into these issues in much more detail and precision.
This session is open to all delegates to attend.

Satellite Meetings and Workshops
In recent years, a number of EU Research consortia and other project groups have held their management or dissemination meetings during or adjoining the Conference. This can prove to be a convenient time if a number of the group members already plan to attend the Conference. If you would like to consider this option, please contact Sally Scarlett on +44 20 7348 1978.
Social Events and Leisure Time
The evening base of the Conference will be the Hotel Maison Rouge. This is situated close to the Place Kléber and Place de l'Homme de Fer, the intersection of the four tram lines (A, B, C and D).

Tuesday 19 September, 1930 hours
The Conference Dinner will be held on the evening of Tuesday 19 September at the beautiful Auberge du Kochersberg, the oldest "Auberge" in Alsace, 25 minutes from Strasbourg. Pre-Conference Tour
Sunday 17 September
Strasbourg lies nestled between the Vosges hills on the French side and the Black Forest on the German. Both these areas offer beautiful forest walks, fascinating castle ruins and vineyards at the right time of year. Simon Hayman will again organise a walk in the surrounding area for those interested in seeing a little of the Black Forest.
